Lake Forest Showhouse

Bigger isn’t always better. For the 2015 Lake Forest Showhouse, a nationally recognized annual designer spotlight benefitting The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, we chose the smallest room in the house: the nursery — but make it fabulous. Inspired by all things Wes Anderson, this itty bitty jewel box found definition from an MCM-meets-modern mixmash of cinematic color and metallic fixtures. A wood wall covering, S-shaped Panton chairs, a bold brass crib, pom pom-trimmed drapes and a Sputnik-y pendant light delivered on the texture and drama, while ATS Design Studio smoothed out a hand-polished finish for the custom millwork. In the end, an infusion of high and low made sense: A Holly Hunt mohair throw was draped on the crib and a studded Phillip Jefferies wall covering found a home on the ceiling, but we balanced out the posh with some approachable moments like an adorable game table from Ikea.

In a nod to Wes Anderson’s 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel, we did a rendition of the movie’s reception desk for the nursery’s diaper-changing station.
