River West Garage Conversion

‘Home’ means different things to different people. For some, it’s a single-family homestead with a yard, or a condo with a view. But for this cool daddy-o, only a garage conversion on Grand Avenue would do. A literal interpretation of industrial? Nah, too obvious. This bachelor pad needed a balance of artful moments, rich textures and creature comforts. Case in point: For the main living space, we took the lounge to the next level with an oversize sectional from Lazar Furniture and a custom sofa upholstered in shearling — and worked in two beloved club chairs that the homeowner found at the Les Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market in Paris. Throughout, we stuck to a minimal palette of black, white and gray — but got creative with contrasts and pattern play. In the primary bath, par exemple, we commingled white porcelain wall slabs with a herringbone marble floor, brass fittings and a set of statement scones from Ralph Lauren Home.

From the black-and-white photography in the primary bath to a wire wall sculpture in the living room by local artist Eric Gushee, steve + filip design worked with Hy-May Creative to curate a collection of art befitting of their client’s personality and passions.
